Out & About - Local to Tighbhan

A few minutes walk from Tigh Bhan takes you down to the beach at Cuil Bay, it is home to many species of birds, otters, seals and from time to time highland cattle, with views over Loch Linnhe, the Morvern Hills and down towards the Isle of Mull.

As we travel south we come to Castle Stalker, one of the most photographed castles in Scotland, so pull over at Castle Stalker café where there is a good view point and get your camera ready for action. Follow the road onto Port Appin, not only are there good places to eat but a nice short walk along the coastal path to Appin rock, ideal to work up an appetite, or walk off the calories after a meal. At Port Appin there is a small passenger ferry that can take you to the Island of Lismore, ideal for walking or why not hire a bicycle to ride the length of the island, visit the castle, the small museum and coffee shop.

Heading back towards Tigh Bhan is the walk in Duror forest up to the Birth place of “James of the Glen” who was hanged in 1752  for the murder of  “Red Fox “ which he did not commit, here you can see the small bothy where he was born.

The cycle path from Kentallan to Ballachulish is complete and winds its way along the coast, ideal to walk or cycle with plenty of views over the loch which makes it an ideal location for people who enjoy photography also.

Just a few miles up the road we come to Glencoe with all its majestic scenery, walkers paradise with the lost valley to explore, walks over to Glen Etive and also part of the West Highland way up the Devils Staircase, a less energetic walk would be the Lochan at the top of Glencoe village, a walk round the loch with its islands of rhododendrons surrounded by the mountains, another photo opportunity.  To find out more about the area visit the National Trust for Scotland Visitor Centre, here you can learn about the geological formation of the Glen, the wildlife, and for the historians among you about the 1692 Massacre of the MacDonald’s, with woodland walks and exhibitions plenty to keep you occupied.

Moving on we head to Kinlochleven not only is the seven miles distance, a beautiful  drive, walk or cycle  but when you arrive, there is more to see and do, try out the Ice Factor the indoor outdoor centre, check it out you will understand what I mean. Walks up to the “Grey Mares” waterfall, woodland walks and join up with the “West Highland Way” foot path once more.
